Another hit on Rule #48

The NHL has again showed they have no fucking clue about this new rule they were so horny to install, and how it works.

New York Rangers Defense-man  Marc Staal laid out Calgary Flames centre Matt Stajan coming across the blue line in a  game last night.  You can see the hit here clean hit??
Marc Staal was not suspended, nor was a penalty called on the play.

I am not going to debate the legality of the hit, that is not my point here, however, what does bother me is the way this rule is called.  If you have been reading this little blog, you will have seen a few posts about this topic before.

example #1

example #2

In example #1, I showed the hit that resulted in Joe Thornton getting a 2 game suspension for what looked to me like a total accident.   Here is that hit.  "He skated into me"

Then there was the Dan Carcillo hit on the same night, that looked a lot worse, yet received no call, or suspension.  "oops!!"

Now, you can make the argument that in each of these 3 hits, the player getting hit was just as much at fault as the player giving the hit.  And you could also argue that the player giving the hit in each situation could have dialed it back a bit and tried to avoid it.  But at the end of the day, all three looked the same to me, yet only one of these warranted a suspension under rule #48.

Again, here is the rule:  NHL Rule 48 - Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principle point of contact is not permitted.

In the Marc Staal hit, Stajan is not looking at Staal who is rushing towards him.   Whether it was Stajan's fault for not looking isn't the issue in my eyes, according to the way the rule was written, it is a blindside hit.  Same with the other two.  They used that argument with Joe Thornton, even though the player hit was not looking where he was going.  In the Carcillo hit, Fedotenko was falling over as he was hit, but you could argue it too was a blindside hit.

All I am trying to say here is that this rule needs to go, or needs a massive overhaul.  Clearly it is not working as intended.  Also with the mess Colin Campbell has himself in these days regarding email released last week in the wrongful dismissal case brought against the NHL by a former Ref, which despite Campbell's plea's of innocence, look like some players get away with things that others don't.

Me personally, I love seeing these big hits in a game, and I don't think most of them warrant any action by the NHL, however, if a rule is in place, it should be enforced the way it is written, or change the way it is written.  I also believe that if the NHL really wanted to eliminate these head shots and concussions, then they would go back to the old days before the enforcer rule.  Back then, a player knew going into a game that if they fucked around, someone was going to make them pay for it.  Now, a player has no fear of retaliation for anything they do on the ice.  And that is why we see the 'lack of respect' type plays that often result in injuries.

Hopefully one day, people with brains will take over and make things right again, but until that time, we will have this debate every few days over a hit that no one seems to know if it violates rule #48 or not.

Well that it all for now.

Until next time...

RIP Pat Burns

I was only around 11, or 12 when Pat Burns took over as head coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs so I don't remember a lot of his time with us. Back then I was more into playing road hockey and collecting hockey cards then I was actually watching the game on TV.

I do however remember the wild playoff run Burns led us on in '93.  The city, which I had just moved from, was still buzzing from the Toronto Blue Jay's second World Series victory in 2 years.  The Toronto Argonauts took the Grey Cup, and Leafs were poised to make the city a winner for a third time that year.  Alas, it was not to be, but still, it was a wonderful year for Toronto Sports fans.

In the years following, I was able to get a lot more familiar with Pat Burns as a coach, and as a personality in the NHL community, and I always got a kick out of his sound bites.  There are not a lot of coaches like that left these days.  He was old-school.  He took shit from no one, and when he was upset about something, he let everyone know about it.  He exuded passion for the sport.  He was also a warrior, surviving cancer on two separate occasions before finally succumbing to his 3rd bout with the disease at the age of 58.

The biggest shame in this story though, was one that has been around for a few months now, and that involves the Hockey hall of Fame choosing not to induct him this year.   Many people were upset with this outcome, and with good reason.

This man won 3, count them 3 Jack Adams awards (Coach of the year) with 3 different teams.  And not only 3 teams, but 3 Original Six teams: Montreal, Toronto, and Boston.  Not to mention winning a Stanley Cup with the Devils.  I would say that deserves a first ballot entry to the HoF, wouldn't you?

Even if there was a legit reason to over look him, wouldn't you figure, given his health situation, the people that decide who goes in the HoF would have voted him in so he could at least enjoy the fact he was a Hall of Famer for the short time he had left?

I am almost positive that he will be put in the HoF this year, but it seems like a real dick move on the part of the HoF committee.  They will induct him now, not because it is the right thing to do, but more to make themselves look less dick-ish than they really are.  We see this a lot in Pro Sports, where ego and public perception dictates what decisions are made.  And I for one find that sad.  Fucking scumbags.

One thing I did notice was the lack of reporting on the matter from Toronto Star writer, and I use that term lightly, as he is one of the worst, most negative, hack writers on the Leafs beat, Damian Cox.

Remember it was this Cock (this is a more appropriate spelling) that had to break the news on twitter 2 months ago that Burns was dead, even when the man was still alive and well.  Cock then tried to defend his lazy journalism by saying he got the info from a public figure, and therefore did not need to check the facts.  The Star article was handled by another writer, Rosie DiManno.  Normally I would add a link to the story I have just mentioned, but I hate the Star, actually I don't care for any of the big papers anymore, so fuck em.  No link for them!!

My condolences to the Burns family, as well as all his friends both in and outside of the hockey world.

That is all for now

I knew it!!!

For those of you that have been reading my little blog here may have noticed my dislike of both the on and off ice officials.  Late last night I came across a very interesting article written by a guy named Tyler Dellow on his website http://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=3518 (for some reason today I get a 403 error when clicking that link, I hope it is just from a shit load of traffic today).

The article in question shows a pile of emails between Colin Campbell and director of officiating Stephen Walkom that were released in the wrongful dismissal case of referee Dean Warren.

The article shows some fishy shit that pertains to Colin Campbell's son Gregory, and Campbell's apparent hate for Bruins centre Marc Savard.

Luckily TSN.com has some of the article posted on their site, so I will include some of the emails here for you to read for yourselves.  But I implore you all to read the full Tyler Dellow article if the site ever recovers, again, the link to that page is here http://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=3518 .  Mr Dellow's comments really add to the whole thing.  It is really well written.

Here are some of the emails in the article, although not all of them, but enough to get the gist of things.

To Stephen Walkom/Tor/NHL@NHL
Subject Re: Delayed Penalties/High Sticks 02/#/2007 4:24 pm
A bend in the road is a dead end if you round the corner and Dean Warren is standing there. Your answer re: his high stick calls and the score of the game were horse ----. The 3rd call on [player] was while they were down 5 on 4 and on a def zone face off vs that little fake artist [player] I had him in [city] biggest faker going. And Warren fell for it when he grabbed his face on a face off. Your supposed to see the act, not call the embellishing act. Dean Warren has to go with [referee] There must be a way to get rid of this guy. Is there a way we can tract (sic) and total minors called by referees this year. We could then get the minors they call per game...or with 2 [referees on the ice] it is impossible? Warren and [referee] out of [club's] games. Give them to [referees].

Who is the "little fake artist"? Well that would be Mr Campbell talking about Marc Savard. A lot of people questioned the fact that Campbell did not suspend Matt Cooke last year for his head hit to Savard that resulted in a nasty concussion. Perhaps his dislike for the player factored into that? I have often wondered if this happened, and this sort of thing adds some credence to that thought.

Here is another one:

Re [player]
Colin Campbell to Stephen Walkom, Mike Murphy
02/#/2007 09:21 AM
I know Murph and Kinger like [player] as a player but my view of him is this exactly…he puts his whining ahead of the game. I don't think this is a regular occurrence (…..getting screwed) and...exploded...over the disallowed goal. He may be uncontrollable by...and...as I think his frustration level has hit a high point. He hates officials as well. He is still pissed off at [referee] for a call he missed in the playoffs years ago as I remember him bugging Murph about it. Let's give him Warren and [referee] than (sic) he will really have something to whine about.

Sounds like more reason to think personal feelings are involved in NHL decisions.

Here are some more emails regarding Colin's son Gregory and penalties called on him:

Game not televised. Radio announcers said it was a bullsshit penalty…you need to find out for me. How…I don't know but this was awful. 1:30 left in 2-1 game for [team] and [player] scored with 2 second left to tie it up them won in OT. FUCK.

Colin Campbell to Stephen Walkom
Did you find out anything? It was [another referee] that made the call. Keep Warren and gas this shithead. 90 seconds left and he calls a weak penalty…tripping. Makes me sick. If I was at the game I would have had to fine me.

Doting hockey dad? or nepotism at its finest?

There is a lot more to the article, and a lot more emails, but seeing as the site is down, that is all I could include for now.  Man I wish I had written this last night when I found it.  Stupid sleep had to get in the way.  Lesson learned.

In the end, these emails make both sides look bad.  It makes the refs look incompetent, which I believe most are, and it makes the NHL look crooked, which I also believe they are.  I really hope the link to Dellow's site is fixed so the rest of you can read the rest of it, because there is a lot more to it.

Here are some quotes from TSn.ca, from both Bill Daily and Colin Campbell and their statements on the matter.

Daily:

"Any suggestion that Colin Campbell performs his job with any less than 100% integrity at all times and in every decision he makes is way off base and just factually wrong.  Because of the potential for a conflict of interest, or more importantly a perceived conflict of interest,  the League has implemented various structural protections that prohibit Colie from having any oversight or disciplinary authority relating to any game in which his son, Gregory, plays.  Its always fair to question and criticize League decisions as being wrong, but not on the basis that they aren't justly and fairly arrived at."

Campbell:

"For me, it's much ado about nothing. Stephen and I would have banter back and forth and Stephen knows I'm a (hockey) dad venting and both of us knowing it wouldn't go any further than that. Stephen would laugh at me. The game in question (when Gregory Campbell was penalized late in the Atlanta-Florida game) wasn't on TV and I was asking Stephen to find out for me if it was a soft call. That's all there ever was to it. The (refs) working that game are still in the league, aren't they? Stephen handled the officials, just like Terry Gregson does now, and I've got a lot of emails to those guys asking about this soft call or that soft call and that's in a lot of games. I'm not ultimately responsible for the (on-ice) officials, that's Terry Gregson's responsibility, but I have to answer to GMs on these calls."

Here is the full TSN.ca article.  http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=341367

I am also a bit surprised that this story has not been a bigger then it should be.  But that is the media for ya.  Maybe the story will gain traction in the coming days.

On a side note, NY Rangers ass-bag Sean Avery was back at it last night with a sucker punch to the face of Edmonton's Smid.  As usual, no call, and no NHL discipline.  But with these emails out there today, I must say I am not surprised by this pattern of him getting away with shit like this all the time.

Anyway, that is all for now.  Keep checking that link to see if it works, it is worth the read.

With Friends Like These...

I seen this coming, but then again, I am sure most people with half a brain seen it coming too.  Being a Toronto Maple Leaf fan is not easy, but what makes it a lot harder then lackluster teams is the fans and the media, both of which I am convinced are legally retarded.

Today the Leafs announced that they have called up prospects Nazem Kadri and Keith Aulie.  A move to help spark the struggling offense.  The amount of negative outcry form this move is simply mind boggling.  Before the season started, everyone in Leaf's Nation was lining up to blow this kid to completion, he was the second coming of #99.  Then the preseason started and he did not play well, so after wiping the DNA from their chins, they demanded this kid be sent to the minors for some seasoning.  When the team began to falter a few weeks back, these same talking heads on TV, the idiot sports writers, and the even more dumb comment whores all flip flopped once again and cried for the Leafs to call up their saviour, and now that it has happened, these fucktards are still complaining.

"It's too soon"  "This reeks of desperation"  "Burke is not following the plan" and on and on.  There are the types of things people are saying today.  People are never happy, and Mr Burke can not win no matter what he does in this market of morons.

As I stated during the 4-0-1 start to the season, the same imbeciles that were planning the parade route after the first 5 games, are now calling for heads to roll, namely head coach Ron Wilson, among others.  Dion Phanuf was everyone's favorite player during that time, was then booed after a few losses.  "Oh, he is terrible, why did we trade for that guy?"  Well now that he is hurt and not playing, no one seems to notice how big his contribution really was.  That shows you that most Leaf fans don't actually know anything about the sport they claim to love so much.  Most of these assholes look at the box scores and stats and nothing else.  They don't see the little things that go into making a team play well night in and night out.

In fact, during this skid, the team has been playing well for the most part. There has been a few stinkers, and some boneheaded plays, but over all the team is playing well, and should have picked up a few wins along the way.

I was planning on posting this past Tuesday about the GM meeting and them shooting down all the good ideas, but ended up going out and not having the time.  I went to my favorite pub to watch the game with a few friends, and this proved my point about most  fans being clueless.  I said before the game started that the Leafs would not be able to beat the Lightning, which as a fan with brains, was an easy prediction. One of my friends that was with me knows absolutely nothing about hockey, even though he watches a lot of games.  He was maybe pretending to know something by stating what players were terrible, and what ones were good.  he was nauseatingly wrong on everything that came out of his mouth.   [He wanted me to give him a shout out in my next blog, but after reading this, I think he will be happy I didn't use his name]

There was some random Joe sitting at the bar that seemed to agree and parrot these same notions.  Clearly both these geniuses have gained everything they know from reading other clueless comment whores on the internet.  As the game spiraled out of control, they seemed confident in their astuteness.  "Giggy is the worst goalie we have ever had" came out the random Joe's mouth after Stamkos one-timed a slap pass into the back of the net.  I am sorry, Patrick Roy on his best day was not stopping that shot.

Clearly this expert can't remember yesterday, let alone last season.  Vessa Toskala ring any bells? How about Andrew Raycroft?  Bunny Larocque anyone?

It is shit like this that pisses me off about Leaf fans.  Then there is everyone harping on Dion, Komisarek, and so one for defensive lapses, yet no one seems to notice Francois Beauchemin is a turnover machine.  What about the forwards not doing the job?  Again, its expertise like this that is rampant in Toronto.  No wonder everyone hates leaf fans so much.  Leafs problem is scoring, and that is about all that is wrong.  It's hard to win without getting goals, and it didn't take a genius to see that was going to be a problem before the season started.

Another thing is, during the first 5 games of this season, when Kessel was scoring like a madman, people seemed to forget about the trade that brought him here.  Now, like clockwork, the team is losing, and once again the Kessel deal is the reason for it all.  Fuck, get over it people.  Seguin probably got lucky that he was not drafted by the Leafs.  The fans and media would have crushed him too, like they have done to every other prospect he have had here in years, minus Luke Schenn, who seems to have muscled his way through the bullshit, even with his bad start last season.

I feel bad for Kadri, much like Burke, he is going to have a rough ride no matter how things play out.  Build 'em up, and knock 'em down.  That seems to be the way things are in Leafs Land.

How do the Leafs fix things?  I am not sure.  Burke has stated a million times that he was not done adding pieces to the line up.  That is not as easy to do these days in the new NHL as it was in the pre salary cap days. And honestly, what players really want to come to a team who's fans and media are so schizophrenic?

A coaching change could help.  Wilson is the only coach in Leaf history to go two years with out making the playoffs and still kept his job.  Also, 80% of teams that changed coaches mid season in the last 2 years have went on win a ton of games.  Lets not forget the Penguins who were out of the playoffs near the end of the season when they changed coaches, and went on to win the cup that year.  I am not saying that is the only solution, but it is a solid option.

In the end, the bi-polar fan and media response is not helping things one bit, and in fact I believe is part of the problem.  The team makes knee-jerk reactions to appease these fucktard fans, and in the process of trying to make them happy only seem to raise their ire even more.

Anyways, that is all for now...

Until next time

The second coming of Miss Cleo?

Am I the second coming of world famous psychic Miss Cleo?  I would like to think so based on my prediction that Darth Moron (my latest name for NHL fuck-tard Gary Bettman) would not over turn Dwight Shrute (see last post) AKA Mike Murphy's 2 game suspension given to Sharks star Joe Thornton.

Sadly I am not Miss Cleo like in any way, and not just because I am not currently in prison, but rather that it did not take any precognitive abilities to see that this walking sack of useless would not do the right thing, and admit that the NHL fucked up on this one.  Like many other goofs before, and many more to come in the future, his ego would not allow it.  And that really is the problem.  In every situation when a bad decision is made, the NHL head office would rather see the league crash and burn than have someone under-mind their authority.  It reminds me of Hitler choosing to attack Russia in the winter, and when it soon became apparent he sent his men to a sure death, and in turn, sealing Germany's fate, instead of admitting he fucked up, he pressed on, and we all know how that ended for him.

Even though I knew that this was how things were going to play out, It still pisses me off. How this man still has a job, how any of them still have a job for that matter makes my brain hurt trying to figure it out.  He must have some incriminating photos of a pile of the team owners and GM's.  That has to be it.

The following is some excerpts from an article posted today by ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.  Mostly quotes from the people involved in the incident, and their reactions to today's over the phone appeal hearing.

This first quote is from Joe's brother and agent, John, regarding the NHL upholding the suspension.

"The league once again failed to follow any precedent they have set when making disciplinary decisions. They stated this was most similar to the [Nick] Foligno hit [earlier this season]. which only resulted in a $2,500 fine.

I could not agree more with that statement.  Like I was saying yesterday, there is no rhyme or reason for what merrits a suspension and was does not.

He continues...

"When Joe asked the league, directly, what he could have done differently, they could not clearly explain. I guess being 5'9" was Joe's only solution to avoid this suspension. We are extremely disappointed with the league's decision and feel the continuing uncertainty with league actions will only hurt the fans of the NHL."

Again, when asked what he could have done to avoid it, these assholes had no clue, further proof that ego is more the reason than any rules or facts.  When the people responsible for creating a rule can not give a straight answer, what does that make you think?

St. Louis Blues president had this to say about the incident...

"Joe Thornton is a terrific player but he crossed the line," Davidson said. "Is he not supposed to be subject to what the penalties are in this league if he crossed the line? Joe Thornton is not a dirty player. But he crossed the line. We have a player that can't play tonight because he got a shoulder to the head that was blindsided."

Blindsided?  Crossed the line? Are you fucking kidding me?  The dude skated into his shoulder.  Even Stevie Wonder could see that.  And he can't play tonight? He played the rest of that game and scored a fucking goal.  I mean I don't like to see a guy get hurt (actually that depends on who it is, my blood lust is funny that way), but come on, it was a total accident, and just as much Perron's fault.  I mean if I walk into a wall and break my nose, is it the walls fault?  No, it is my fault for not looking where I am going, and maybe the beer company's for making beer so delicious.

Here is what Joe Thornton had to say about it...

"I didn't actually see the hit until this morning. I didn't intend to hurt or do anything bad to him. He kind of ran into me, to be honest with you. Last night and this morning I had about three dozen text messages from players around the league saying they can't believe I even got a penalty."

See? Other players think the same thing.  It is utter bullshit. Joe then goes on to talk about how that was his first penalty of the season, well I guess second, he was leaving the box when it occurred from his first penalty of the season.

"So 11 games into the year and I get my first penalty, I was on pace to win the Lady Byng and all of sudden I get flagged for an illegal head check," Thornton told ESPN.com. "That's a little strange since I have no history with that. But it is what it is. You look at the new rule, I think they're still in limbo at the rule in itself and they're not quite sure maybe on how it should fly and I got caught in the middle of it."

No history with that sort of thing is what really pisses me off.  The NHL loves to talk about dealing with repeat offenders, yet they seem to selectively enforce this notion, like not doing anything about the Dan Carcillio hit on the same night.   Again, it makes no logical sense.  In that case, Fedotenko was falling down, and could not avoid the hit Carcillo laid on him.  And with his track record, it should have been a no brainer, which is why the NHL over looked it, as they in fact have no brains.

San Jose GM Doug Wilson gave this statement.

"We strongly disagree with the two-game suspension handed down by the NHL today to Joe Thornton. What is most distressing is that we feel the suspension is not consistent to the recent reviews by the league following similar collisions resulting in players leaving the penalty box and establishing their place on the ice, including [Los Angeles Kings defenseman] Willie Mitchell on [Chicago Blackhawks forward] Jonathan Toews."

Wilson went continued:

"In Joe's case, it was clearly not a predatory-type hit with an intent to injure, shown by the fact that the player returned to the ice for his next shift so it is clear that the contact to the head was minimal. We put a lot of time and effort into helping define the NHL's new rule on headshots but we feel strongly that this suspension is not a reflection of the rule's true intent."

He makes some good points.  But like I said before, this will not be the last cluster-fuck of  inconsistency we will see this season.  This will continue as long as the NHL employs ego maniacs in the head office.  Of course Darth Moron and his side-kick Colin Campbell would not comment on this story, and that makes sense, as they know what ever they say will make them look stupid, however that hasn't stopped them before from opening their yaps.

Here is the link to the Pierre LeBrun article I got the quotes from.  http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=5768457

Well that is all for now, I am off to watch the game, and see if anything tonight angers me enough pull out the old keyboard.

Dwight Schrute Suspends Jumbo Joe!

If we were to compare Gary 'Napoleon" Bettman to the New York head office of Dunder Mifflin, Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations, Colin Campbell would be akin to the bumbling Micheal Scott, which would make vice president of hockey operations Mike Murphy Dwight Schrute.  It was Mr Schrute, um I mean Murphy that handed out a 2 game suspension to San Jose Shark's Star Centreman Joe Thornton for a "illegal" hit to the head on Blues pivot David Perron last night.

The hit in question was one of a trio of  hits on the night that flirted with the new, and  poorly implemented head-shot rule, or Rule #48 as it in known in some circles. The rule is as follows.

NHL Rule 48 - Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principle point of contact is not permitted.

Although looking at the three hits, Joe Thornton's was the only one that not only didn't warrant a suspension, it is even debatable if a 2 minute minor should have been called on the play.

For those of you that didn't see the play, it basically went down like this.  Thornton was leaving the penalty box, and was about two strides away from the box as Perron was skating towards him.  At the last second Thornton sees Perron coming, and turns away from him, and appears to brace for impact.  Perron then precedes to skate into Thornton.  It was clearly an accident, which resulted in a 5 minute major, a game misconduct, and a 2 game suspension that will cost $77,419.36 in lost salary.  Here is the Joe Thornton hit

Sure there was contact with the head, but are we now going to suspend people when someone skates into them?   The answer to that, according to Dwight Schrute, Fuck, I did it again, I meant Mike Murphy is a resounding YES!!!  I am guessing Murphy was horny to show papa Campbell he was a big boy now, and could hand out stupid suspensions just like his boss, which I can only assume is his idol, and adversary and the same time.  (In keeping with the Office theme)

Now we move on to the second incident on the night starring the NHL's second biggest douche-bag, Flyers agitator Dan Carcillo and his way worse head-shot on Rangers  player Ruslan Fedotenko.  This play was way more deserving of a suspension than the Thornton hit.  During this play, Fedotenko was looking for the loose puck, and lost his balance.  As he was falling, Carcillo not only made contact with the head, but left his feet on the hit, making the hit even dirtier.  What makes this situation even worse is that the ref not only didn't call a penalty, but told Fedotenko "Don't duck". Basically blaming the victim for being raped. If you watch the play, the man is falling, and not only that, but falling with more than enough time for Carcillo to avoid the collision. Here is the Carcillo hit

So lets review here.  Two plays where you can argue that the contact was accidental, one being a lot more nasty looking than the other.  One involving a guy that hasn't been suspended since 2002, and one that has a history of dirty head-shots, and the lesser in both aspects gets suspended.  How does that  even make sense?  The answer, It doesn't.

The NHL has used the 'track record' of a player to help dole out suspensions.  Daniel Briere's little cross check the other night got him 3 games because he is a 'repeat offender'. Okay, fair enough, but what about Carcillo? He has a track record a mile long, that alone should have got him a meeting with Colin "Micheal Scott" Campbell.  Here is the incident, which in my awesome opinion should have received maybe a 2 minute roughing penalty. Pay attention to who gets involved after the cross check. Go ahead and guess, I dare you. I bet you can't guess who it is.  Briere's love tap

The problem is no one seems to know what the fuck is going on with this rule.  Actually that is not true, the fans and most of the hockey media seem to have it all figured out, and come to a consensus minutes after the fact. It's the idiots that made the rule in the first place, as well as the stooges paid to enforce it that seem the only ones confused by their own creation.  This does not surprise me though, as for the last decade or so, the clowns running the NHL have shown more incompetence than O.J. Simpson prosecutors (too soon?).

There was a third incident that took place as well, but I can't remember who it was, and I am too lazy to look for it, but it was a hard hit into the boards from behind that also resulted in no suspension, but it doesn't matter anyway, my point is, when looking at both hits I have added links to, based on the definition of Rule #48 I included in this wonderful article, you have to say that either both hits deserved a suspension, or neither of them did.  You can't have it both ways, unless you are bi-sexual, but that really has nothing to do with this topic.

It is just another example of the inconsistency that is the NHL. Will San Jose appeal? Probably.  Will it change anything? Probably not, egos will not allow for them to overturn any mistake the NHL makes.  They have shown that a million times in the past.  Phoenix Coyotes ring any bells?

Anyway, that is all for now, I think I am going to go watch "The Office" with all this Dwight Schrute talk.
Until next time...

Finally someone with brains!

I have been talking about this for a few years now, I planned on mentioning it in a previous blog, but I am not sure if I did or not.  You see, I am usually sideways drunk when writing this blog, so I sometimes forget things.

Anyway, Florida Panthers GM Dave Tallon is planning to submit an idea at the GM meeting in Toronto this coming Tuesday that would allow coaches to challenge a call, a la the NFL.  I for one think this is a great idea, and not only because I have been saying the same thing for years, but because it makes a lot of sense.

Mr Tallon has some pretty strict criteria that would be part of this proposal.  I have copy/pasted the details from a TSN.com article that I will add a link to at the bottom of this blog.

> Applies only to goal-related plays
> Challenge must be issued within prescribed time limit
> Team must have timeout left to issue challenge
> Unsuccessful challenge results in loss of timeout
> Successful challenge results in no loss of timeout
> One challenge per team per game

Sounds reasonable.  Tallon says he decided to send the proposal to  NHL Senior VP and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Cambell after the game winning goal scored by Toronto's Colton Orr in a game against Florida earlier this season was clearly goaltender interference.  Even I agreed that goal was a bad call.

Being such a great idea, I am willing to bet $5 it never happens.  Why do I think this? Simple, like I said, it is a great idea, and great ideas and the NHL rarely go together.  Only stupid things like the trapezoid behind the net, the shoot out, and the enforcer rule, which by they way is responsible for all the head shots and other nastiness the NHL wants out of the game simply because players have no fear of on ice repercussions for their actions anymore, and don't even get me stated on some of the stupid things they were trying out in the pre-season, but I digress.

I hope the powers that be see the logic in this proposal, but I have my doubts.

Ignore the people with ADD in the comment section complaining that this will slow down the game.  These people clearly can't see that this will not happen every game, and probably wont happen all that often.  But some people would rather bad calls than wait a few extra minutes to get the right call.  And it will be these same assholes that cry when their team is out of the playoffs by 2 points that they could have gotten if this rule was in place and a lost game was actually a win for them.  Every point counts at the end of  an 82 game season.  God the internet makes me want to slap people.

On a side note, anyone see Crosby drop the gloves last night?   How I would love to see him and Ovie go at it.  It would be like Ali vs Foreman, but you know, before George started selling grills.  Think of the T-shirt and DVD sales the NHL would make off that shit?  Get Don King on that shit ASAP!

Anyways, that is all for now
Until next time...

Who gave this asshole a mic?

Watching the leaf/Caps game tonight on TSN, and one thing is pissing me off to no end,  is this fuckbag Pierre McGuire.  What a douche!  Every time he opens his mouth I want to punch my T.V.  This walking scrotum is one of them dudes that thinks he knows everything, but actually knows nothing about anything.

He sits between the team benches during the game and talks shit about players that are feet away.  If I was a player, I would fire a puck in there as hard as I could.  There aint much room to duck in that little cubicle. "You don't seem to have much to say now McDick! Now that have your bald head in a head lock".

When he does offer up his opinion, it is little more then musings from Captain Obvious.  That is when he manages to say something semi relevant.  The rest of the time he speaks, it makes me want to invent a time machine so I can go back in time to remove his momma's ovaries.

For those of you not familiar with this awful human being, I have included some links that demonstrate what a creepy asshat this clown is...

These are just a few examples of this twat being himself.

What are your thoughts on old Pierre?

Please leave a comment.  No one has used the comment section so far, now is as good a time as any to pop the comment cherry.

**Side Note**

I want to give a special thanks to one Tim Binnall of Binnall of America for giving this little blog a plug on his Pop Cast show (episode 13)

I linked to his other show BoA Audio, and his interview with former a NBA ref a few posts back.  I highly recommend checking out his pod cast if you are into the paranormal, UFO's, and all sorts of shit like that, as well as his POP Cast show dealing with pop culture and movie reviews.  He is the top dog in his field.
